At a Feb. 22 Faculty Council meeting, Chancellor James Moeser and other campus
leaders called for a collegial tone in the current debate on transportation and
parking issues. Moeser said that "only an invasion of your personal space"
touches more nerves than parking. He called Carolina's typical approach to
debate "remarkable" and cited the example of the discussion on whether the
University should pursue a degree program in Qatar as a worthy model of the
tone such debates should take.
"That culture of collegial respect and civility really is critical," he said.
Employee Forum Chair Tommy Griffin also addressed the council, calling for the
campus to come together in taking on the issue.
"We didn't just get into this situation," he said. "We've been in it a long
time."
Students' welfare should be first and foremost, he said.
"If I had to choose between paying to park and having someone get a good
education, I'll pay to park, I'll ride the bus," he said.
Estroff put her sentiments succinctly.
"Let's try not to kill each other on this one," she said.
