of Public Schooling in America, Aug. 30 at the Friday Center.

Nominations
open for UMDP
The
University Management Development Program (UMDP), a professional development
program for managers and supervisors, is seeking nominations for as
many as 35 participants from Carolina.
Individuals may nominate others or themselves by submitting a nomination
form to Training and Development by Sept. 6. An employee must have his
or her supervisor's approval to participate.
The program begins Jan. 15, 2003, and events and classes are scheduled
throughout the year. Graduation is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2003.
Because of the program's expense, the University requires that nominees
make a commitment to attend all sessions.
The nomination form can be found at www.ais.unc.edu/hr
For more information, call Rob Kramer at 962-9683 or Claire Miller at
962-9682.

New
telephone rates implemented July 1
Effective
July 1, Academic Technology and Networks implemented changes in local
and long distance telephone service rates.
Rates for most local telephone service remain unchanged; minor changes
were realized on services other than basic Centrex lines. However, rates
for basic rate ISDN service increased approximately 32 percent to a
new rate of $55.
Long distances rates, both intrastate and interstate, were decreased
by approximately 50 percent, to 5 cents per minute. International long
distance rates increased by approximately 8 percent.
In addition, a new network/infrastructure charge of $3 will be assessed
on each University Centrex telephone line to partially address the unfunded
infrastructure costs associated with new building projects on campus.
For detailed domestic and international rate information, refer to www.telecom.unc.edu
For more information, call 962-1148.

New
policy restricts study abroad credit
The
administrative boards of the General College and the College of Arts
and Sciences and the Educational Policy Committee have approved a revised
policy regarding participation in study abroad.
General College and College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students
can receive academic credit only on study abroad programs that are formally
approved and administered by the Study Abroad Office, the Summer School
or the Department of Romance Languages. This policy applies to any program
taught outside the United States by Carolina faculty and programs taught
outside the country that are administered by U.S. universities and colleges,
foreign universities or independent educational providers.
Robert Miles, director of the Study Abroad Office, invites faculty to
meet with him to discuss new program approval or development.
The policy is published on the Study Abroad Office web site, studyabroad.unc.edu,
and will be published in August in the 2002-03 edition of the Undergraduate
Bulletin. For more information, call 962-7002.
Students may petition to have an outside program approved for credit.
Sept. 3 is the deadline for petitions for spring semester programs.

Nominations
for unsung hero award sought
July
24 is the deadline for submitting nominations for the Robert R. Cornwell
Unsung Hero Award. Named after a University employee who died unexpectedly
in 1994, this award is presented annually to a current, full-time, permanent
employee who has provided significant service in support of the University
over a long period of time and, generally, from a background position.
Excellence in the quality of work performed is the standard used for
selecting the recipient, but of equal importance is the likelihood that
the employee's work is unnoticed by much of the University community.
The nomination form is available at www.ais.unc.edu/ir/cornwell/CornwellNomination.html
or by calling 962-1500. A committee of faculty and staff, along with
Cornwell's widow, Joy, will choose the winner, who will be honored at
a ceremony on Aug. 15.
To contribute to the Cornwell award, send a check to the Office of University
Development, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514-0309

ATN's
computer-based training expands
While
the web address remains cbt.unc.edu
for self-paced, online, computer-related training for faculty and staff,
the site has moved from the campus server to one hosted by SmartForce.
As a result, the number of courses has jumped to 250 and instant help
is available through two new features. An "Ask My Mentor"
link offers advice on courses from SmartForce staff, and an online chat
allows learners to obtain technical assistance from SmartForce support
staff.
A link to cbt@unc.edu on the home page
directs questions and comments to Academic Technology and Networks (ATN)
staff.

Herbarium
seeks volunteers
The
UNC Herbarium, now a part of the North Carolina Botanical Garden, is
seeking volunteers, teens to adults, for a variety of duties, including
sewing, gluing and filing of plant specimens and data entry. For more
information and to volunteer, call Carol Ann McCormick at 962-6931.

Center
lists public service groups on web site
The
Carolina Center for Public Service is working to make its web site,
www.unc.edu/cps/, more informative
and user-friendly. The "A-Z List of Public Service" link showcases
organizations on campus and in the community involved in public service.
It lists these groups alphabetically, with a short description and web
site/e-mail link, giving students an easy way to find service opportunities
that interest them.
To list an organization on the center's page, contact Trevor Bynoe at
bynoe@email.unc.edu
