Hill Hall/Battle-Vance-Pettigrew Hot Water
Science Complex Phase I
Hill
Hall/Battle-Vance-Pettigrew Hot Water
Overview
* Project location: Adjacent to McCorkle Place.
* Projected cost/funding source(s): $600,000/state repair-and-renovation.
* Scope/benefits of project: Replace existing central heating hot water
services at Hill Hall and extend new heating hot water piping to Battle/Vance/Pettigrew
halls and to the new Institute for Arts Humanities (IAH) building.
* Projected construction timeline: August 2002 - Jan. 31, 2003.
Impact
on campus aesthetics
* Trees/green space/landscaping: At least one tree on the west side
of Hill Hall will be removed and replaced. Project involves excavation
and backfill to install new steam and hot water lines. All disturbed
areas will be restored to pre-construction condition.
Impact
on parking and transit, traffic, and pedestrian safety
* Parking and transit: Fifteen parking spaces west of Hill Hall's main
entrance will be closed from the start of the project until Oct. 1.
* Pedestrian safety: Access to Hill Hall's west entrance will remain
open. Piping will be installed from the northeast corner of Hill Hall
to just south of the IAH building. A sidewalk will be closed to accomodate
this work, and pedestrians will be routed around the area.

Science
Complex Phase I
Overview
* Project location: South of Phillips Hall; between Kenan Labs and
Wilson Library.
* Projected cost/funding source(s): $87.15 million/total - $52.26 million/state
bond; $16.56 million/self-liquidating and overhead receipts; $18.33
million/private.
* Scope/benefits of project: Phase I of the Science Complex includes
an addition to Phillips Hall and a new Sciences Building between Kenan
Labs and Wilson Library. These buildings will replace facilities in
Venable Hall, slated for demolition in Phase II. Along with providing
much-needed space for the basic science departments of physics and astronomy,
chemistry and mathematics, these new facilities will provide space for
interdisciplinary activities such as materials science, polymer science,
nano-technology, separation science, applied mathematics, sensor technology
and advanced visualization. The program includes new undergraduate classrooms,
teaching and research labs, and a science theater to address existing
space deficiencies.
* Square footage: Phillips addition, 124,550; Sciences Building, 144,259.
* Projected construction timeline: Site construction begins Sept. 9;
building construction to run March 17, 2003 - Aug. 4, 2004.
Impact
on campus aesthetics
* Trees/green space/landscaping: All trees will be removed in the area
between Wilson Library and Kenan Labs; trees west of Carroll Hall will
be removed. Venable parking lot will become quadrangle/green space;
east portion of area between Wilson and Sciences Building to be green
space with remainder to be building.
* Architecture: Buildings to relate contextually (scale, mass, materials,
etc.) to surrounding buildings.
Impact
on parking and transit, traffic, and pedestrian safety
* Parking and transit: Effective Aug. 15, all parking spaces in Venable
to be removed permanently, and parking spaces in Wilson lot will be
removed permanently except for eight spaces.
* Pedestrian safety: Signage will indicate pedestrian paths around construction,
and flagmen will be posted at the S. Columbia Street and South Road
construction entrances.
