Alan Feduccia
S.K. Heninger professor and chair of biology, Feduccia was the fall Distinguished Smithsonian Lecturer at the National Museum of Natural History. "T. Rex Was No Four-Ton Roadrunner" discussed the problems in linking the development of birds and dinosaurs.
Robert E. Gwyther
Professor of family medicine and director of medical student education, Gwyther was installed as president of the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians Inc. He will serve a one-year term.
Karla A. Henderson
Professor and chair of recreation and leisure studies, Henderson received the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Society's Honor Award, the highest award given by the society, in recognition of outstanding achievement in the recreation movement and unselfish devotion in the service of professional leadership.
Alan Howe
Research assistant professor of pharmacology, Howe received a National Cancer Institute Howard Temin Award, a five-year grant, for his developmental research on the growth and movement of cancerous cells.
Jessica Jones
WUNC-FM reporter, Jones was awarded "Best Spot News" for her breaking news story about a mistake on a standardized math test given to N.C's public school students, and honorable mention for a feature on special education by the N. C. Association of Educators and the State Board of Education/Department of Public Instruction.
Laurie E. McNeil
Assistant chair and professor of physics and astronomy, McNeil has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society. She was recognized for "numerous contributions toward improving the climate for women in physics." She was also invited to be a member of the U. S. delegation to the Conference on Women in Physics.
Y. Jack Ng
Professor of physics and astronomy, Ng
has been named one of 30 "R & D stars to watch" by Industry Week magazine for his research on the nature of space, specifically the measurement of vibrations caused by quantum foam.
