University and UNC Hospitals employees contributed a record amount through this
year's State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC), breaking the $1.1 million
mark.
The campaign was led by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Robert Shelton
and June Steel, director of planned and regional gifts. Their leadership, and
that of the division leaders and volunteers, was instrumental in the drive's
success.
The total of $1,107,326.76 was announced at a celebration for the division
leaders and volunteers held Feb. 12 in the Pope Box of Kenan Stadium. The
celebration was attended by Chancellor James Moeser, who congratulated all
those present for their hard work and perseverance in helping make this year
such a success. Steel also thanked the volunteers for their tremendous effort,
especially "in light of the events of 9/11."
"Carolina showed compassion not only for the country but for the local
community by giving their time and money so generously to the campaign," she
said.
Working through the United Way, the SECC gives employees a chance to direct
support to more than 1,000 charitable organizations that provide services on
local, state, national and international levels. The University and UNC
Hospitals contributed 25 percent of the campaign's statewide total of $2.44
million, making the tandem the largest contributor among state agencies.
Alicia Moore, SECC campaign manager with the United Way, summed up this year's
campaign by saying: "We knew it was going to be a rough year with the current
economic situation in the state, but after 9-11, we knew it would be even
harder. But the generosity and care for the community on behalf of those who
gave money enabled us to surpass our goal. It was the generosity in the hearts
of those who gave, in addition to the hard work of the volunteers, that made
this year's campaign such a success."
