Grumet to step down as School of Education dean

Madeleine R. Grumet, dean of the School of Education, announced Feb. 12 that she will not seek another term in that post so that she can pursue her teaching and writing interests as a member of the school's faculty.

Grumet became dean in 1998. Accomplishments during her tenure include creating the Carolina Teaching Network, a part-time master's programs available to teachers in Durham, Orange and Chatham counties; and LEARN North Carolina, an Internet-based resource for the state's public school teachers.

In her remaining time as dean, Grumet will focus on program and facility development for the School of Education wing that is being added to Chapel Hill's new Smith Middle School.

The wing will provide a center for collaboration among the School of Education and teachers and students as well as host the Carolina Teaching Network's outreach efforts.

Robert Shelton, executive vice chancellor and provost, said he soon will appoint a search committee to name Grumet's successor.
