Forum debates resolution on parking

The Employee Forum debated Feb. 6 a resolution staking out a position on transportation and parking issues but did not act on the document.

The forum felt the resolution would have limited its ability to negotiate issues being discussed by the Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee (TPAC). Among other stands, the resolution called for no increases next year in parking permit costs and a maximum $50 per semester charge for night parking on main campus.

Higher permit fees and a night parking program are among the possibilities being discussed by TPAC as ways to generate $2 million to balance next year's transportation and parking budget.

But Jimmy Workman, one of the forum's representatives on TPAC, said specific figures such as the $50 limit for night parking would tie his hands when it came to negotiating the forum's views at TPAC.

And the forum chose not to table the resolution until its March meeting, because by that time any action would have been too late to be included in TPAC's discussions. TPAC must iron out its proposals by the end of this month if they are to get to the University Board of Trustees in time for it to act on them in March.

The resolution was discussed after Bob Knight, TPAC chair, gave the forum an overview of TPAC's work. Several forum members voiced opposition to higher parking and transportation costs for employees, saying employees already have been hit hard by slim pay increases and higher health insurance costs.
