Easier. Simpler. Faster.
In three words, that's what University researchers wanted the process of applying for grants to be. In an effort to meet those goals, an office for sponsored research has been created that will report to Tony Waldrop, the vice chancellor for research and administration.
Previously, grants had been handled by two different offices, with each reporting to a different administrator. The Office of Research Services had reported to Waldrop, while the Office of Contracts and Grants had reported to Nancy Suttenfield, vice chancellor for finance and administration.
Suttenfield and Waldrop, in a jointly prepared University memo, said the change will bring unified responsibility, greater efficiency and enhanced teamwork for both pre-award and post-award services.
"It is our goal to create the environment necessary to make the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the premier public research institution in the nation and to assure continuous improvement of the services and information provided to everyone performing or supporting research on campus," they wrote.
Waldrop, in an interview, elaborated. "We wanted to try to create a situation where there would be one-stop shopping that would allow a grant to be handled from beginning to end by one office," he said.
No time frame has been set for when the new office will open. Waldrop said he and Suttenfield will be working with an advisory committee of faculty, business managers and administrators as they develop a structure for the new office.
