Development actions shouldn't affect Carolina

The Chapel Hill Town Council recently moved to slow its consideration of development projects, but the council's action will not affect construction projects for Carolina's main campus, said Jonathan Howes, special assistant to the chancellor.

Howes said that upcoming main-campus construction is covered by the town's development plan, which the University worked on with the town to comply with its regulations as specific construction projects are completed over the next decade.

However, development away from the main campus, which is not covered by the development plan, could be affected, Howes said. One example is the Kenan-Flagler Business School's plan to expand the Rizzo Center, Howes said.

Still, town staff members have said they will recommend expedited review of the Rizzo Center project so that it can move forward, Howes said.

As for the Horace Williams tract that the University plans to develop off of Airport Road, Howes said plans are still years away and would not likely be affected.

Town officials are most concerned about slowing growth in eastern Chapel Hill, particularly in the immediate area surrounding U.S. 15-501 and Erwin Road. Another problem area is U.S. 15-501 at Eastowne Drive.
