Big Names on Campus

Bob Simon, a correspondent with CBS's 60 Minutes II and contributor to 60 Minutes, will lecture April 29, 6 p.m. in Carroll Hall.

William Safire, columnist for The New York Times and Pulitzer Prize winner, will discuss "What's Going to Happen in Washington" April 16, 5:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall.

Julia Alvarez, award-winning author, was the keynote speaker at the North Carolina Literary Festival April 5-6.

Jane Goodall, scientist, spoke at a "Celebration of Roots & Shoots" on April 3.

Tobias Wolff, award-winning author, was the Morgan Family Writer-in-Residence March 18-22 and, among other appearances, gave a public reading in Hill Hall auditorium.

Alfre Woodard, Emmy award-winning actress, gave the Sonja Haynes Stone Memorial Lecture March 5.

James B. Hunt, former N.C. governor, spoke to a "State and Local Politics" class on Feb. 28.

Dean Smith, retired men's basketball coach, signed copies of the new paperback version of his 1999 autobiography on Feb. 21 at the Bull's Head Bookshop.

Paul Wellstone, U.S. senator, gave the William P. Murphy Lecture at the School of Law on Feb. 18.

George Stephanopoulos, news analyst, best-selling author and former senior adviser to President Clinton, delivered the Roy H. Park Distinguished Lecture Feb. 5.
