Carolina will kick off the 2001 State Employees Combined Campaign on Oct. 1.
With a theme of "Be the Light on the Hill," organizers hope to raise $1.1
million for local, state and national non-profit organizations. The campaign
will run from Oct. 1 through Nov. 1. Last year, the SECC raised more than $1
million.
Robert Shelton, executive vice chancellor and provost and SECC co-chair, said
that the 2001 campaign offers employees a wonderful opportunity to continue
Carolina's strong tradition of serving the people of North Carolina.
"I had no hesitation to serve as co-chair and consider it an honor," he said.
"The combined campaign serves as an efficient vehicle for those of us fortunate
to work at Carolina to give to our communities.
"I believe my serving as co-chair emphasizes the message of the importance of
the campaign to our employees and our neighbors across the state."
During the month-long campaign, volunteers will approach all Carolina employees
to ask for their participation and support.
Chancellor urges support for SECC
Editor's note: The following is the text of an e-mail message sent Sept. 24
from Chancellor James Moeser to Carolina faculty and staff. Passages that no
longer apply because of timing have been deleted.
In the wake of the September 11 tragedy, I have been deeply touched by how
superbly the Carolina family - students, faculty and staff - has responded to
the needs of others through volunteer efforts and many other selfless acts of
service.
One other way the University community traditionally helps others is through
the State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC), which each of you will be hearing
more about within your own departments, schools and units in the coming days.
The campaign runs from October 1 through November 1.
The SECC raises money to help support non-profit charities that serve Orange
County, the Triangle region, the nation and the world. Employees who choose to
participate select which charity or charities to support. Conducted annually,
the campaign is the only state-approved fund-raising drive that allows
employees to deduct their contributions from payroll.
Last week, the statewide SECC leadership decided not to create a separate fund
within this year's campaign that specifically addresses assistance for victims
of the terrorist attack. Reasons for that decision included avoiding
duplication of the many well-run efforts that already exist.
Please continue to think of those victims and the needs arising in the
aftermath of September 11. And some organizations conducting relief efforts -
The Red Cross and The Salvation Army are just two examples - will remain among
the charities you could select as part of the SECC. I also urge you to keep in
mind the long-term needs of all the agencies that are part of the SECC effort
and their focus on providing important services year-round.
You, the members of the Carolina family, have rightly earned a reputation for
placing a high priority on helping meet the needs of others. I am confident
that trend will continue now and in the years to come. Thanks to all of you for
what you do to help your fellow citizens.
Sincerely,
Chancellor James Moeser
