Immediate opportunities
* The American Red Cross of Orange County needs volunteers to help with its relief efforts. To volunteer, call 942-4862, ext. 28 to speak with the disaster services director or go to the Red Cross office.
* Any trained Red Cross volunteers are asked to contact their local chapter by e-mail.
Blood drives
* Sept. 26: Orange County Red Cross Chapter, 2-6:30 p.m.
* Sept. 27: Orange County Red Cross Chapter, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
* On-going: Blood platelets and plasma may be donated Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m., at the UNC Hospitals Platelet & Plasma Donor Program office on the first floor of N.C. Memorial Hospital. Call 6-2370 to schedule an appointment.
Donations
* The Campus Y is collecting money for the National Disaster Relief Fund. A table will be in the Pit for the next few weeks to collect donations.
* Monetary donations can be made directly to: Orange County American Red Cross, 101 Ephesus Church Road, Chapel Hill NC 27514; Salvation Army, 800-725-2769; United Way of New York City, 2 Park Avenue, New York NY 10016; American Red Cross, 800-435-7669.
Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund
* This fund, to which football fans made donations totalling some $15,000 with matching dollars at the Sept. 22 Carolina vs. Florida State University game, was created to provide assistance for postsecondary education to financially needy children and spouses of those killed or permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks. The fund was begun by Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA) in Minneapolis and the Lumina Foundation for Education in Indianapolis. To make a donation, go to http://www.familiesoffreedom.org or call 877-862-0136. Or checks can be made payable to the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, designating the "Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund." Mail to: Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, 1505 Riverview Road, P.O. Box 297, St. Peter MN 56082.
