Minority volunteers are needed to register as potential bone marrow donors on Oct. 16, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., in the Great Hall of the Student Union. The process takes about an hour; volunteers give a test tube of blood that will be analyzed, with results entered into a worldwide registry.
Marrow and blood cell transplants are the only cure for certain life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia. The characteristics of marrow are inherited, so patients' best chances of finding donors, outside their families, is within their racial or ethnic group. The current minority donor pool is inadequate. For example, less than 30,000 Asians are in the registry, and successful matches are one in 20,000.
