Ronald Rindfuss is the recipient of the Robert Paul Ziff distinguished
professorship. Rindfuss, who joined the Carolina faculty in 1976, teaches
undergraduate population and family sociology courses. At the graduate level he
teaches courses on demographic techniques and the sociology of fertility. He
has served as director of the Carolina Population Center, and is now a member
of the Center's advisory council.
A widely acknowledged family demography expert, among several areas of
research he is currently working on the reasons behind the relatively stable
level of American fertility as compared to trends in most other economically
advanced countries.
He is the author or editor of four books and more than 80 research
articles. He earned his doctoral degree from Princeton University.
Rindfuss has served as a member of Chapel Hill's planning board, in
additional to numerous professional affiliations.
One of the Margaret and Paul A. Johnston Professorships, the Robert Paul
Ziff distinguished professorship was established in honor of William Rand Kenan
Jr. professor emeritus Paul Ziff, who has worked extensively in aesthetics,
philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. The Johnston professorships
were established in 1987 in the College of Arts and Sciences to honor retired
faculty members.
