The University-wide Blood Drive committee has started filling appointment slots
for the 13th annual event, which will take place July 24 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
at the Dean E. Smith Center.
The Carolina blood drive, one of the largest employer-sponsored blood drives in
the nation, anchors the Carolina Blood Region during the blood shortage this
area faces every summer.
This year's theme is "Be a Life Preserver, Lend a HEELing Hand," and members of
the Carolina community can do just that by contacting their departmental
recruiters, or by simply dialing BLOOD (2-5663) to make an appointment.
Donors can also register at the blood drive web site, which is
http://www.sph.unc.edu/blood/ Calls for appointments will be given priority
over web registration.
Walk-ins are also welcome, but those who make appointments ahead of time will
have shorter wait times.
Orchestrating an event of this size requires many volunteers who perform such
tasks as donor greeting, check in, escorting donors from one location to
another and working in the canteen area. Volunteering is a way to contribute
for those who, for whatever reason, cannot donate blood. To volunteer, contact
a department recruiter or e-mail Bob Schreiner, volunteer coordinator, at
Bob_Schreiner@unc.edu
A list of department recruiters can be found on the blood drive web site along
with detailed transportation information. Parking will again be free in the
Bowles lot and an extended shuttle service will run all day from many areas of
campus to the Smith Center.
Donation of blood is considered work time. By participating in the blood drive,
Carolina employees truly are lending a "HEELing Hand."
