UNC HOMEPAGE
.The millennium takes a back seat this month as the University honors an
important musical milestone -- the birth of the world's greatest trumpet
player, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.
It's been 30 years since Armstrong died, but the legacy of his gravelly scat --
which he improvised in 1926 -- and his cornet and trumpet music live on in the
"2001 Carolina Jazz Festival: Celebrating Louis Armstrong's Centennial."
Satchmo once said, "The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician.
Things like old folks singing in the moonlight in the back yard on a hot night
or something said long ago." The University evokes memories of Armstrong and
the Jazz Age with a multimedia festival of theater, art, seminar, films, dance,
