Memorial service set for Shumaker

A memorial service to honor James H. Shumaker, a longtime professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication,

will be at 4 p.m., Feb. 1, in the Carroll Hall auditorium.

The service will include comments from colleagues, students, family and friends. Shumaker died Dec. 19, 2000, at UNC Hospitals after a battle with cancer. A funeral service was held in Hillsborough on Dec. 22.

"We felt the University community and others needed a time to express their feelings for Professor Shumaker, and the school wanted to provide that opportunity," said Dean Richard R. Cole. "We welcome anyone to attend."

Shumaker had taught journalism since 1973 at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and spent more than half a century working in print journalism as a reporter, editor and opinion writer.

Aside from his decades of dedication to both print journalism and teaching, Shumaker was well known as the inspiration for the late Jeff MacNelly's popular comic strip, Shoe, which runs daily in more than 1,000 newspapers worldwide.
