UNC HOMEPAGE
The Training & Development Department is now taking nominations for the
2002 University Management Development Program (UMDP). Nominations are due
Sept. 7.
UMDP is a twelve-month professional development program specially designed for
University managers and supervisors. Forty participants -- 35 from the
University and five from N.C. Central University -- are selected annually
through nomination to attend the program.
There is no fee to attend UMDP. By investing in the careers of its leaders,
Carolina seeks to help managers increase their job effectiveness and advance
the quality of work life for all. The University would like to ensure that the
UMDP experience is rich and rewarding and one that provides learning that is
readily applicable to the participant's managerial career with the University.
The objectives of UMDP are:
* Expand participants' knowledge, skills and abilities -- critical needs in a
changing University environment -- through a range of experiential and
classroom sessions;
* Increase awareness of professional strengths and developmental needs through
assessments and coaching; and
* Network with other Carolina and N.C. Central leaders -- strengthen
capabilities and provide ongoing feedback and support systems -- through small
group exercises, breakout sessions, and peer coaching.
The program includes five "core program" days, covering topics such as
leadership development, strategic planning, change management, managing
conflict, facilitating meetings, project management and the changing American
workforce. Participants also will enroll in two to four elective courses as
part of their customized development plan.
Because of the high volume of nominees competing to participate in UMDP, as
well as high program costs, the University requires that nominees commit to
attend all sessions.
All applicants seeking nomination to UMDP must complete the following courses,
available through Training and Development, as prerequisites to admission:
Supervisory Resources, Interaction Management and It Takes All Types:
Understanding Your Myers-Briggs (MBTI) Personality Type.
Supervisors may nominate their employees, or employees may self-nominate.
