UNC Health Care goes live with filmless x-rays

The radiology department at UNC Health Care is implementing PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), which allows soft copy reading of x-rays on high-resolution monitors.

The "Go Live" is slated for the third quarter of the year, and is the inaugural step in the hospital's goal of being a "filmless enterprise." When fully implemented, PACS will allow the acquisition of images, as well as their interpretation and storage, in a digital form without using film. All images will eventually become part of patients' online medical records.
