Twenty-five of Carolina's graduate degree programs and specialty areas are
among the top 25 nationwide in U.S. News and World Report magazine's
latest such rankings.
Of those 25, 16 made the April 9 issue's top 10. (See box for details.) The
remaining nine making the top 25 were:
Kenan-Flagler Business School tied for 18th (overall).
The research arm of the School of Education earned 18th place.
The School of Law tied for 23rd (overall).
The master's of public administration program earned a 12th-place tie.
The School of Medicine's research tied for 24th.
English tied for 18th (Ph.D.).
History tied for 13th (Ph.D.).
Political science tied for 15th (Ph.D.).
Psychology tied for 17th (Ph.D.).
Carolina Chancellor James Moeser said the University's primary goal remains
becoming America's best public university, "not winning a rankings race devised
by a magazine."
"Graduate education is a vital part of what makes Carolina a great university,"
he said. "These programs long have been a powerful force in the well-being of
North Carolinians. Top-notch graduate programs help the University attract
research funding that benefits the economy. Many talented students who earn
graduate and professional degrees in Chapel Hill stay in our state to make
contributions to the workforce in both the public and private sectors."
U.S. News does not rank every program and specialty every year. Carolina
had several top entries in last year's rankings for programs not listed this
year. They included: the School of Public Health's master's and doctorate
degree programs (both third); public health's master's degree program in health
services administration (second); the School of Nursing's master's program
(fifth); and the nursing school's nursing service administration program
(fourth).
