SECC aims for $1 million in 2000

Carolina will kick off its part in the annual fundraiser, the State Employees Combined Campaign, on Oct. 4.

With a theme of "Partners in Giving," organizers hope to raise $1 million for local, state and national non-profit organizations through the Orange County Campaign, which runs from Oct. 4 through Nov. 10. Last year's goal for Carolina was $830,000, and the campus raised $935,000.

Sue Kitchen, vice chancellor for student affairs and SECC co-chair, said that the 2000 campaign offers employees a wonderful opportunity to support agencies that provide services right here at home and also to those that make a difference around the world.

"The State Employees Combined Campaign is the only state-approved fund-raising campaign that allows employees to payroll deduct their contributions, and they can give to one or as many causes as they want to support," Kitchen said.

This year, the campaign will kick off with a volunteer rally in the auditorium of the Student Union on Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All volunteers are encouraged to attend the rally and those that do will have a chance to win door prizes.

"The volunteer rally is a chance to really bolster enthusiasm for the month-long campaign and educate everyone on agencies that are available to support. We also want to show our volunteers how much we appreciate their hard work," Kitchen said.

Among the door prizes are tickets to the Maryland football game, family memberships to Morehead Planetarium and books from the Bull's Head Bookshop.

"I want to encourage faculty and staff to stop by the fair," Kitchen said. "It's the wonderful way for people to learn about the campaign and the agencies it supports and ask questions about how their money will be used.

"The SECC is such an easy way for employees to support causes that matter to them most and they can do that by designating their gifts.

"By attending the agency fair and carefully reviewing the agencies listed in the campaign booklet or on the SECC web page, employees can give where they feel it will do the most good."
