Bill McCoy started a temporary pedestrian safety committee in January to study
what could be done to make walking and riding around campus less dangerous.
Now, Chancellor James Moeser has agreed to establish a permanent committee to
continue that work indefinitely.
In addition to University Public Safety Chief Derek Poarch, the new committee
will consist of University transportation planner Ray Magyar and
representatives from the Highway Research Center, Legal Counsel, Facilities
Planning, the town of Chapel Hill and the state Department of Transportation.
The Employee Forum, Faculty Council and undergraduate and graduate student
bodies also will be represented.
Poarch will continue to chair the permanent committee, Moeser said. Moeser also
directed Poarch to establish a pedestrian safety hotline, which was among the
recommendations of the temporary committee that completed its work in May.
"Thank you for your excellent work in chairing the (temporary) Pedestrian
Safety Committee," Moeser wrote Poarch in an Aug. 18 letter. "I am confident
that, with your continued leadership, the new permanent committee will be
equally effective."
In response to the committee's work, the state Department of Transportation
implemented over the spring and summer several experimental measures to
increase safety.
