Howard E. Aldrich

Kenan professor of sociology, Aldrich received the following awards from the Academy of Management: Distinguished Scholarly Career Achievement Award and the George R. Terry Award for the best management book published in 1999.

Ken Bollen

Professor of sociology and director of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Sciences, Bollen is the recipient of the 2000 Lazarsfeld Award from the methods section of the American Sociological Association.

David A. Brenner

Professor of medicine, Brenner was named editor-in-chief of the journal Gastroenterology. Brenner is chief of digestive diseases and nutrition and a professor of biochemistry and biophysics.

Raymond E. DuBose

Director of Energy Services, DuBose was elected to a two-year term as chair of the International District Energy Association. The association comprises heating and cooling executives, managers, engineers, consultants and equipment suppliers from 18 countries.

Jianqing Fan

Professor of statistics, Fan received the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies Presidents' Award for his "important and wide-ranging contributions to statistics." The award is given annually to a statistician under the age of 40 for major contributions to the profession.

Harold R. Roberts

Sarah Graham Kenan professor of medicine and pathology, Roberts received an honorary doctor of medicine degree from Lund University in Sweden for his contributions to coagulation research. He also received a gold ring from that university's vice chancellor and a two-cannon salute during the ceremony.

Jeff Sekelsky

Assistant professor of biology, Sekelsky was named a 2000 Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar and will receive $200,000 over four years. The award is focused on biomedical research on aging.

Oliver Smithies

Excellence professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, Smithies is the winner of a 2000 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Innovation Award in Functional Genomic and will receive $300,000 over three years.

UNC Press

Ada Ferrer's Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-1898, published by UNC Press, won the 1999 Berkshire Prize from the Southern Association of Woman Historians.

Yanping Zhang

Postdoctoral research associate at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Zhang is the winner of a 2000 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences and will receive $445,000 over four years.
