Much-honored faculty member to retire from full-time teaching


Professor Joel Schwartz will retire from full-time teaching at Carolina effective December 2000. He will become an adjunct professor in the Curriculum in Public Policy Analysis, teaching there as well as in the Honors Program until 2005.

A faculty member since 1965, Schwartz has received eight teaching awards, including a University Professor of Distinguished Teaching Award in 1998, the Tanner Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 1968 and 1974, a Bowman and Gordon Gray professorship in 1979 and the Nicholas Salgo Distinguished Teaching Award in 1983. Several senior classes voted him one of its favorite teachers.

He also has received the General Alumni Association's Faculty Service Award.
