Two staff get management award

Two top-notch departmental administrators received the 2000 Excellence in Management Award.

They are:

* Kay Andrews, cell biology and anatomy; and

* Nancy Nye, pathology and laboratory medicine.

The award program, administered by the Office of Human Resources, recognizes meritorious and distinguished accomplishments in management at the University.

The two recipients of this year's award not only have managed day-to-day departmental activities on a superior level but also have handled great changes within their respective units.

Andrews

Andrews has always managed the administration of her department with superior efficiency and a positive attitude. When new challenges were thrown her way, she did not change her exemplary performance, even during a long and difficult departmental move and building renovation.

As one nominator stated: "Kay was the coordinator for all the laboratory moves and the conduit for all related problems and complaints-temperature, air quality, noise, communication connections, safety concerns, plumbing and electricity. If there was a problem she was the one who dealt with getting it solved. She maintained a pleasant, calm demeanor and continued to deal with each little emergency efficiently. She never seemed to lose her cool, her sense of humor or transfer the stress to anyone else."

Another nominator echoed, "Clearly, Kay's efforts are exemplary under normal circumstances, and considering the major changes in our facilities that have affected nearly every aspect of the Department's functioning, her work has been remarkable!"

Nye

Nye has had over thirty years of distinguished service with the University. These years have presented Nancy with "more challenges than even a business manual can address," as one nominator said.

Her career boasts many special achievements, one of the most notable being the administration of the unification of the Department of Pathology and the Division of Laboratory Medicine into the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

This became the only department in the school that is considered both a basic science department and a clinical department. As one nominator said, "In many ways this has management requirements of two separate departments rather than one."

Nye's newest undertaking is coordinating the renovation of the department's major research building. Her department chair says of this endeavor: "It represents only one in a long line of management challenges Nancy has faced and converted into successes for the department, the school and the University."

The honorees received a monetary award of $500 and were recognized at a luncheon held in August.
