Carolina ranks number one in best college buys

For the second year in a row, the University has topped Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's list of best values among public colleges and universities.

The October 2000 issue of the magazine attributes Carolina's top spot to its combination of top-quality academics and low cost.

Ranking criteria included in-state and out-of-state costs, graduation rate, SAT or ACT scores, and financial aid need.

Carolina's in-state costs are $8,508 and out-of-state costs are $17,674. The University of Virginia, number two on Kiplinger's list, charges $15,360 in-state and $22,653 out-of-state.

Other UNC system schools in the top 100 are N.C. State University, Appalachian State University, UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Asheville.
