Suttenfield recommended for finance post

Chancellor James Moeser has recommended that Nancy D. Suttenfield, Case Western Reserve University's vice president for finance and administration, be appointed the new vice chancellor for finance and administration.

The University Board of Trustees approved Suttenfield's appointment at its regular Sept. 28 meeting. The nomination now goes to the UNC Board of Governors for final approval. If approved, Suttenfield would begin work Nov. 20.

Suttenfield would succeed John P. Evans, a professor of operations and former dean in the Kenan-Flagler Business School, who has served as interim vice chancellor since James R. Ramsey left the University in June 1999.

Suttenfield's selection resulted from the work of a search committee chaired by Robert Sullivan, dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School.

As vice chancellor for finance and administration, Suttenfield would serve as the principal finance and business officer of the University and report directly to the chancellor. The position's responsibilities include oversight of financial planning, budgeting and management; facilities planning, construction and operations; human resources; general accounting; and contracts and grant administration. The University's total operating budget is about $1.2 billion.

In recommending Suttenfield for the Carolina position, Moeser stressed her successful financial stewardship of Case Western Reserve, a major private research university in Cleveland, Ohio, with an annual budget of $465 million and an endowment of $1.58 billion. He also said her strategic planning and organizational development efforts had made a significant difference in the success of both public and private organizations.

"Nancy Suttenfield has demonstrated the highest levels of competence in her professional career," Moeser said. "Her leadership style exemplifies collaborative decision-making and inclusiveness. These attributes will prove invaluable in this vital University position, as we seek to establish Carolina as the best public university in the nation.

"On behalf of the entire University, I would like to commend Jack Evans for providing such excellent leadership during this transition period. The business of our University has proceeded smoothly. We are all in his debt for his continued dedication and devotion to making Carolina better."

Before coming to Case Western Reserve in May 1996, Suttenfield served as assistant secretary for finance and administration for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., from 1990 to 1996. Before that, she had served as acting under secretary (1990) and director of the Office of Planning and Budget (1986 to 1990) for the Smithsonian. While serving as assistant secretary for finance and administration for the Smithsonian, she restructured information resource management and technology services functions, permitting broader access to institutional resources at much reduced cost. Based on these and other efforts Suttenfield launched, the Smithsonian won a 1993 CIO Magazine Excellence in Customer Service Award.

Suttenfield holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in economics from Virginia Commonwealth University.
