University officials have been unable to distribute NCFlex enrollment
booklets as scheduled because of last-minute changes that have led to printing
delays. Eligible employees can expect to receive the booklets in their campus
mailboxes soon, said JoAnn Pitz, the University benefits director.
The state had previously set Nov. 9 as the deadline for turning in enrollment
forms. Pitz said she thinks there is a possibility the state will extend that
deadline because of the delay sending out booklets.
Changes in employees' plans will take effect Jan. 1.
Pitz encourages employees to carefully read the entire booklet. Listed below
are some important things to keep in mind.
Employees should estimate carefully the amount of money they put into these
plans. Dollars deducted from pay that are not required for reimbursement of
eligible expenses will not be refunded or carried over from year to year.
The enrollment form has a box to check if the employee does not want direct
deposit of these reimbursements to his/her bank account. Unless this box is
checked, the reimbursements will be done as direct deposits.
Once an employee signs up for one of these plans, he/she cannot change the
amount unless there is a change of status as explained in the NC Flex brochure.
Enrollment is on an annual basis for the medical spending account and the
dependent care spending account.
Employees who participated in either of these plans in the current year must
re-enroll for the coming year if they wish to continue coverage.
UNUM Insurance Co. submitted renewals for a two-year extension, with a rate
increase of 12 percent to reflect claims experience. (See chart.)
AD&D portability has been added, which allows covered employees and their
dependents to continue coverage at the current group rates after the insured's
employment ends.
PortAssist has been added as a way to continue the Assist America travel
assistance services for employees who are terminating and who port their
AD&D coverage. This plan offers the same travel assistance services
available with Assist America when traveling 100 miles or more from home.
Pitz said University employees should look for changes in the dental plan when
they receive their booklets.
