Student union renovation and expansion project begins in June

Work begins next month on an addition at the student union.

The construction will cause the following changes for about a year:

* Fences will enclose the union along Raleigh Street and South Road, including the parking driveway.

* The stairwell between the union and Student Stores leading to the Pit will be closed.

* The bus stop on South Road will move to the area behind the undergraduate library.

* Automatic teller machines will be moved permanently to the area behind Davis Library on Raleigh Road.

The entire project will last about two years and be divided into three phases. At no time will the entire union be closed. All services housed in the union will continue throughout the building and renovation.

When the project is finished, the enhancements will include:

* More office space for student organizations;

* A 24-hour computer lab and copy center;

* Internet and laptop connections;

* Enhanced handicap accessibility;

* More places to purchase food; and

* More room to relax and socialize.
