Gerald Horne, who served as director of Carolina's Sonja Haynes Stone Black
Cultural Center since 1996, is stepping down to focus on his research.
Horne resigned his posts as director of the Stone center and the Institute of
African-American Research, effective June 30.
Horne, who has been in Hong Kong as a Fulbright Scholar this past year, has
requested an additional year of leave to continue his research. That request
will be forwarded for final approval by the University Board of Trustees in
July.
Horne is scheduled to return to campus in July 2001 as a tenured professor in
the Department of Communication Studies with joint appointments in both the
departments of African-American studies and history, he said.
Harry Amana, a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication,
will continue as interim director of the Stone center and will be recommended
to continue serving as interim director of the institute. He held both titles
this past academic year while Horne has been in Hong Kong.
Carolina will launch a national search for directors of both the Stone center
and the institute and will move forward with plans to begin construction of the
Stone center.
