Reading program needs leaders

The Carolina Summer Reading Program is back for its second year, and faculty and staff members are again needed to lead small group discussions.

The discussions, required for incoming freshmen and transfer students, will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 21 at locations to be announced later. Volunteers must be faculty or staff who have taught at the college level or presented before large student groups.

Groups will discuss Confederates in the Attic, a bestseller by Tony Horwitz about the Civil War and its lingering social effects. Discussion leaders will get free copies through the Bull's Head bookstore, as well as a packet of materials to help prepare for discussions.

To volunteer, submit your name, phone number and e-mail address to Read@unc.edu by July 30.

Chancellor-elect James Moeser and his wife, Susan, each plan to lead a discussion session.
