UNC HOMEPAGE
To University employees:
The last two weeks of snow and ice have been highly unusual for our University
community, and I want thank everyone for their cooperation and assistance
during the adverse weather. In particular, a number of our employees and units
were essential in keeping Carolina running. On behalf of our students, faculty
and staff, I want to thank everyone involved in this important endeavor.
We owe a special debt of gratitude to the members of our Facilities Services
staff who, among other things, worked to clear snow and ice from our roads,
parking lots and sidewalks and kept our utility systems operational. Many spent
hours in the cold -- sometimes in near-blizzard conditions -- and braved
treacherous roads to get to campus. In all honesty, we couldn't have reopened
our doors without their hard work.
Staff in Student Affairs -- especially in the Student Health Service and in
Housing and Residential Education -- performed yeoman's service, making sure
our students were well cared for. Public safety, including our parking
enforcement officers, did an outstanding job, as did payroll and Administrative
Information Systems staff, who made sure paychecks were ready. Key Health and
Safety staff, as well as University Relations employees, also helped us get
through the bad weather.
Finally, I want to thank Carolina Dining Service and our vendors who went
beyond the call of duty to make sure our students were fed. I was delighted
that a number of our campus dining facilities and snack bars were open and
ready to serve students. Sodexho Marriott did a truly exceptional job.
I am extremely proud of the response by our critical employees during the
recent storms. They have once again demonstrated that the University is ready
to rise to the occasion and meet such challenges head-on. Thank you very
much.
Sincerely,
William O. McCoy, interim chancellor
