Joan Rose of Michigan Radio has been selected as WUNC-FM radio's new General
Manager beginning February 5, 2001. WUNC Radio is licensed to the Board of
Trustees of the University of North Carolina.
"Joan Rose has a solid broadcasting background and a strong commitment to
public radio and the service it provides to its audience," said Nancy Davis,
the chair of the search committee and associate vice chancellor for University
Relations. "WUNC-FM is already one of the top public radio stations in the
country, and I'm confident that under Joan's leadership, the station will get
even better."
Jonathan Howes, WUNC's current interim general manager, said: "Joan Rose is a
leader in public radio. I am pleased that she will bring her leadership to
WUNC."
Rose, currently the program director of Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor, Mich., the
public radio service of the University of Michigan, began her career in radio
in 1979. She started in North Carolina as a news anchor for WPTF/WQDR in
Raleigh, later moving to WBT-AM in Charlotte and then to WJR-AM in Detroit.
Before returning to radio at Michigan Radio in 1996, she worked in community
relations at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Rose's years as program director at Michigan Radio resulted in awards from the
Michigan Associated Press for "General Excellence" for four straight years, the
Michigan Public Broadcasters award for top public radio station three years in
a row, and numerous other news awards. She currently serves as the chair of the
Public Radio Program Directors Board of Directors and as a consultant to
Marketplace for its local news project.
Rose looks forward to returning to North Carolina and working at WUNC.
"I am delighted to join a station and staff recognized as among the best in
public broadcasting," she said. "WUNC has an excellent tradition of public
service, a loyal audience, and the potential to expand its reach to new
listeners. I look forward to drawing on the intellectual and cultural resources
that North Carolina offers."
WUNC-FM radio is a public service of the University and broadcasts
informational, educational and cultural programming to the communities of
central North Carolina. WUNC Radio operates four stations that serve
communities from Greensboro to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
