UNC HOMEPAGE
A memorial service celebrating the life of Federico Guillermo Gil, Kenan
professor emeritus of political science at the University, will be held at 4
p.m. Aug. 24 at the Newman Catholic Student Center, 218 Pittsboro St.
Those attending are invited afterward to the home of Lars Schoultz, chair of
Carolina's political science department, at 250 Glandon Drive, to share
memories of Gil (pronounced "HILL").
Gil, an internationally known pioneer in Latin American political science
studies, died April 22 at the age of 85. He wrote classic works on Latin
America, helped develop the framework for President Kennedy's Alliance for
Progress and served as consultant and adviser to the United Nations, the
Inter-American Development Bank, the Peace Corps and other international
organizations. He retired from the University in 1980 after 37 years of
service.
The University's Institute of Latin American Studies, which Gil directed for 25
years, organized the service and is compiling brief remembrances of Gil. Those
may be in English or Spanish and e-mailed to vmatthew@email.unc.edu or sent to
the institute at CB# 3205.
