New Medical school program to train researchers

The School of Medicine has won federal funds to provide an in-depth, two-year clinical research training program for eight to 10 junior faculty, each of whom is committed to a career as a clinical investigator.

The school was one of 35 medical institutions to win the award, which provides $200,000 per year over five years and is renewable. The Clinical Research Curriculum Award comes from the National Institutes of Health.

Trainees will take courses through the schools of medicine, public health and pharmacy, including a newly designed seminar program focused on drug development. All trainees also will design and carry out a comprehensive clinical research project. At the heart of the program is a novel mentoring system in which senior faculty members will work closely with trainees, helping them with coursework and research and with setting and then achieving their long-term career goals.
