This year's celebration thanking employees for their hard work now has a
name: "Cool Your Heels."
Originally to be in the student union's Great Hall, the May 24 event
instead will be in Carmichael Auditorium -- a change made to ensure that there
will be plenty of room for festivities. Cool Your Heels will run from 2 to 4
p.m. All employees are invited to attend the event, which is being organized by
the University Managers Association (UMA).
Cool Your Heels will feature free ice cream served to employees by a
number of "celebrity scoopers," including Interim Chancellor William O. McCoy
and members of the chancellor's cabinet. Punch, popcorn and cookies will be
available for anyone who can't tolerate dairy products.
"Employees are the backbone of this University, and we are appreciative of
their hard work every day," McCoy said. "The ice cream social is one small way
the campus community can begin to express its thanks to the men and women who
play such an important role in making and keeping Carolina great."
Along with refreshments, Cool Your Heels will boast door prizes and the
H.E.E.L.S. for Health Wellness Expo, which will feature vendors with
information about healthy living as well as hands-on opportunities for personal
growth and wellness.
May 24 will mark the debut of Cool Your Heels. Carolina's former annual
event thanking employees -- the Employee Appreciation Fair -- was held in the
Dean E. Smith Center. It was discontinued because of high labor demands and
budget cuts.
Just like with the fair, volunteers are needed to put on Cool Your Heels.
Tasks for volunteers include helping vendors set up their booths, admitting and
greeting employees, scooping ice cream for 30 minutes and keeping Carmichael
clean. To volunteer, contact Trevaughn Eubanks, SHSBCC, CB# 5250, phone 2-9001,

"Although the ice cream social is on a smaller scale, we still need
volunteers," said Eubanks, chair of the UMA committee planning Cool Your Heels.
"There's no way we can organize a quality event without the help of
volunteers.
"I really enjoy working with the volunteers because they take ownership of
the event and have fun at the same time. They help make the event run
smoothly."
The name "Cool Your Heels" was conceived by Phyllis Farlow, an information
and communications specialist in the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)
program.
Farlow said the inspiration came easily: "All I had to do was imagine
those UNC folks and how good the ice cream would taste on a hot summer day."
